This is the personal website of Dustin Royer. I am a teacher
in southwest Louisiana and a radio amateur, callsign KG5AFX. Outside of work and radio, I
spend a lot of time with my family and our two dogs, Skippy and Copper. My
other hobbies and interests include fishing, playing the guitar, watching baseball, and laughing
at the birds that visit my wife’s feeder. I also have what my daughter
describes as an unhealthy obsession with John Prine. I’m glad you dropped by and hope life treats you well.
I am currently the curriculum coordinator of DeQuincy High School, a small high school in southwest Louisiana. When asked to describe what a curriculum coordinator does, I describe it as a combination of an assistant principal and a school counselor. I enjoy helping students figure out what they might want to do after high school and how our offerings can help them achieve those goals. I'm also an assistant football coach, golf coach, and esports coach. I have previously taught high school mathematics and business education classes.
I hold an Amateur Extra license, KG5AFX, and enjoy primarily operating on HF, although I am now active on two meters and 440 MHz, due to the generous donations to the ARRL Teachers Institute, which I was privileged to attend in late May 2025. While there I learned several activities to introduce students to amateur radio. Additionally, I received equipment for projects and demonstrations, and I was able to upgrade my license from General to Extra.
On HF, I have a Ten Tec Jupiter. I’m still working out a suitable antenna for my current house, but I’ve just about settled on a homebrew trap dipole for 80-10 meters. I just need to gather the materials and find the time to construct it.
To avoid internet scrapers, I won’t put my contact information here, but, if you’re clever enough, I bet you can find me. You found this site, after all. If you’re in southwest Louisiana, you can probably reach me on 146.52 MHz or on the W5BII repeater, 145.35 MHz, negative offset, PL 103.5.
